Projects

South Africa

We have a project underway in South Africa. We are also planning, discussing and negotiating other future projects.

South Africa - 10+ million trees across 5,000+ hectares in next 5 years.

What TERRAGRN is doing in South Africa?

TERRAGRN is leasing land from the local community to plant its agroforest. TERRAGRN is developing a sustainable, biodiversity-compliant, agroforest of 10+ million trees across 5,000+ hectares of land – by 2030. One-third of the integrated agroforest system will be non-invasive varieties of bamboo plants, while the rest of the forest will have fruit trees, cereal crops, indigenous cover crops (intercrops) and indigenous trees.

Why South Africa?

In the past, South Africa has embarked on an important and ambitious development plan to create an inclusive economy with more jobs and skills, socio-economic equity, energy sufficiency, food security, resilient infrastructures, and safer environments. South Africa has abundant potential which makes it an ideal location for new, pioneering green businesses. The Forestry and Agriculture sectors are already vital to South Africa’s economy, social welfare, and job creation and TERRAGRN will build on and contribute to this strong economic foundation.  The community and workforce will be shareholders of the company, ensuring alignment of goals and long-term wealth distribution.

How TERRAGRN aligns with South Africa’s climate goals?

Under the Paris Agreement, South Africa has committed to limiting its greenhouse gas emissions to 398-510 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) by 2025, and to 350-420 MtCO2e by 2030., TERRAGRN’s thriving South African agroforest will be fully grown by 2030 expedite South Africa’s pursuit to become net-zero emissions. By 2050, it will have removed over,160 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

How TERRAGRN will create and maintain local jobs?

South Africa’s current challenges of energy shortages coupled with their commitment to transitioning to green energy are likely to result in job losses in the eastern province of Mpumalanga whose economy is currently largely based on coal mining. TERRAGRN will contribute to addressing these challenges by creating sustainable and renewable green energy solutions in the form of green hydrogen. TERRAGRN will generate thousands of new jobs within the local community in Mpumalanga over the next 10 years. We also anticipate several entrepreneurial businesses to emerge in adjunct sectors as a result of the thriving forest. TERRAGRN will invest in skills development within the local community and infrastructural development within the region so more women and young people can enter the workforce and create a more inclusive economy.
